EL CUARTEL DE SANTO DOMINGO NORTE Y VARIOS DESTACAMENTOS RECIBEN ENTRENAMIENTO DE LOS BOMBEROS DE USA. Durante los dias 22, 23 y 24 del mes de marzo varios cuarteles de La Republica Dominicana recibieron entrenemientos por parte de la Sociedad de Bomberos de New Jersey, Fundacion 911 y Fundacion Pro-Ayuda Bomberos Santo Domingo Este. La actidad se realizo en el cuartel General de los Bomberos de Santo Domingo Norte quienes dieron las facilidades del cuartel, equipamiento y logistica en general. El Intendente general, coronel C.B. Julio Gonzales Cespedes agradecio al entrenador Jose Cruz y a todo su equipos los entrenamiento. De su parte la Fundacion 911 agradecieron la asistencia de los participantes y motivo a los bomberos a compartir las experiencas adquiridas. Los Bomberos de New Jersey entregaron uniformes usados de combate a cada destacamento participante. En la ultima foto el Coronel C.B. Julio Gonzales con el equipo de entrenamiento y de las demas fundaciones.

Regresa equipo Bomberos Unidos tras sacar de escombros con vida a 2 personas

El presidente de BUSF, Angel García, reconocía en Barajas que el equipo vuelve muy satisfecho del trabajo realizado, pero teniendo claro que esto es "sólo un punto y seguido, ya que son miles las familias que se han quedado en unas circunstancias muy extremas y hay que seguir ayudando". Por ello, en la zona permanece una veintena de miembros de BUSF, que participan junto a sanitarios de Estados Unidos en labores médicas de emergencia en el Hospital General de Puerto Príncipe, además de desarrollar misiones de potabilización del agua. García tiene claro que los "los dos rescates permanecerán toda la vida en nuestra memoria. Han sido dos maniobras muy exigentes, en circunstancias muy extremas, pero con un final feliz". Por ello, no puede olvidar la frase que Nadine Cardozo, una mujer propietaria de un hotel en Puerto Príncipe, les dedicó cuando la sacaron con vida de entre los escombros. En estas operaciones juegan un papel muy importante los perros, como explica Antonio Rodríguez, responsable de la emergencia de Haití, que recuerda que estos animales son determinantes para localizar los puntos de acceso seguros y más rápidos". "Gran parte de las personas que se han salvado en los primeros momentos ha sido por el trabajo de los perros", explicaba en Barajas mientras los tres canes con los que han trabajado en Haití corrían y se recuperaban de las horas que han pasado encerrados en las jaulas dentro del avión, en un viaje que les "ha alterado".
Tanto García como Rodríguez han coincidido en destacar que han desarrollado su trabajo sin ningún tipo de impedimento, hecho en el que ha influido que BUSF tenga una red iberoamericana.
"Desde el primer momento que llegamos todo estaba perfectamente coordinado y nos dijeron donde dirigirnos para que nuestro trabajo fuera lo más efectivo posible".
Además, han alabado la actitud del pueblo haitiano, que, han dicho, está "dando ejemplo de saber estar" y han asegurado que se han movido mucho por Puerto Príncipe sin problemas, mientras pedían que no se olvide a esta población, que sigue viviendo en una situación muy lamentable.
El equipo de ocho personas de BUSF que ha regresado hoy a Madrid está formado por dos madrileños, dos cordobeses y cuatro onubenses, y viajó a Haití a las pocas horas del sismo. EFE

Los bomberos de Tenerife ya están en Haití

El efectivo del Consorcio de Bomberos de Tenerife que partió este miércoles a Haití para ayudar en las labores de rescate tras el terremoto de 7,3 grados de magnitud en la escala Richter que ha asolado el país, ya se encuentra en el país desde las 09.00 horas de esta mañana (05.00 de la mañana hora local). El contingente de nueve miembros de Bomberos Sin Fronteras (BSF) desplazado al país caribeño cuenta con dos perros guía, dos sanitarios y cinco rescatadores, que participarán en las labores localización de víctimas y se pondrán a las órdenes de las autoridades locales para ayudar en todo aquello que puedan aportar. Una vez en la capital, se pondrán en contacto con la coordinadora de desastres que esté canalizando las ayudas, para que les asignen la zona de actuación que consideren más oportuna. El efectivo llegó sobre las 05.00 horas (hora local) a Santo Domingo y en estos momentos se desplazan a la capital del país, Puerto Príncipe, donde se ha localizado el epicentro del terremoto que ha producido miles de muertos. Según comunican los portavoces del contingente de Bomberos, han tenido que ser escoltados debido a la notable inseguridad que se vive. Además, dicen que el país “está levantado” y los accesos a Puerto Príncipe y las fronteras son muy difíciles, así como las comunicaciones con España y el resto del mundo.

LA County firefighters heading for Haiti

A Los Angeles County Fire Department urban search and rescue team was mobilizing today to travel to Haiti in the aftermath of the magnitude-7 earthquake that rocked the Caribbean island nation. Commanders of the 72-member team received a request Tuesday from the U.S. Agency for International Development and were staging at the Urban Search and Rescue facility at 12605 Osborne St. in Pacoima. Team members were waiting this morning for the order to deploy, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frederic Stowers. "If we are deployed these guys are going over there to be self- sufficient," Stowers said, speaking by telephone this morning from Pacoima. "They'll be working together. If necessary, they'll coordinate with members of the U.S. Embassy in Haiti for translators. But these guys are trained to be self-reliant."

French is the dominant language in Haiti. No French speakers had been identified early today on the county's urban search-and-rescue team but the potential language barrier was the least of squad members' concerns, Stowers said. Firefighters were waiting to learn whether they will fly by commercial or military transport, which will determine
whether they depart from Los Angeles International Airport or March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, a camera crew reported from Pacoima. A departure point for the team and their gear had not been decided on as of 5:30 a.m., Stowers said. "We're waiting to hear from Haiti about an assessment this morning, for logistics and planning purposes," Stowers said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them now." There was no definite timetable for the team's departure from the Southland, Stowers said.

Bomberos Unidos madrileños embarcan hacia Haití para ayudar en el rescate

Otros seis componentes más, de nacionalidad peruana y en su mayoría médicos y sanitarios, se unirán a la expedición en Santo Domingo, donde la ONG tiene una oficina permanente y donde piensan que establecerán su base de operaciones.
Junto con los tres bomberos madrileños, también han embarcado otros seis bomberos de esta ONG provenientes de Huelva.
"Las noticias que llegan desde Haití cada vez son peores" y las primeras 72 horas que siguen a una catástrofe son esenciales en el rescate de las personas, ha explicado a Efe Ángel García que estima llegarán a la República Dominicana sobre la siete de la tarde (hora local de allí), y en un principio piensan quedarse hasta el día 22.
Como bombero voluntario, García se estrenó en labores de ayuda humanitaria en 1998 en Honduras con el huracán Mitch, "y desde entonces -afirma- he salido prácticamente a una tragedia por año".
Bomberos Unidos sin Fronteras, que viaja con varios perros de distintas razas -pastor alemán, labrador y perro de agua español- había estado en primavera en Haití reparando las canalizaciones de aguas de varios edificios.
Varias Horas antes que ellos había partido, también desde el aeropuerto madrileño, una primera expedición, perteneciente a la ONG Intervención, Ayuda y Emergencias de la localidad de Algemesí (Valencia), con cuatro perros -golden retriever-, especialistas en la localización de personas sepultadas bajo los escombros.
Los componentes de esta última ONG cuentan también con una gran experiencia y formación en la localización, rescate y asistencia sanitaria de víctimas sepultadas en grandes catástrofes y han estado en Turquía, Sri lanka, Perú y Pakistán, entre otros países.
Todos ellos trabajarán en la zona que les asigne la Coordinadora de Desastres Nacionales del país caribeño.
El Gobierno español, a través de la Agencia de Cooperación Internacional, prepara el envío de ayuda humanitaria, que se podría trasladar desde la Base Logística que tienen en Panamá.
La secretaria de Estado de Cooperación, Soraya Rodríguez, está reunida con responsables de la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para organizar el operativo de ayuda y seguir "minuto a minuto" la situación en el país caribeño, han precisado fuentes oficiales.EFE

A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and inflicting a catastrophe on the impoverished Caribbean nation, its ambassador to the United States said.

"The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best," the ambassador, Raymond Joseph, told CNN.

The magnitude 7.0 quake struck about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince shortly before 5 p.m. Joseph said he had little information about the extent of damage from the quake, but one government official -- the only one he was able to reach -- told him houses had crumbled "on the right side of the street and the left side of the street."

A hospital collapsed from the quake, The Associated Press reported. Also, damage was done to an airport and the presidential palace, and a hotel collapsed, Haitian radio reported.

The quake damaged several other government buildings, including the parliament building, and a cathedral in the capital, according to Agence France-Presse, citing Haitian TV.

Frank Williams, the Haitian director of the relief agency World Vision International, said the quake left people "pretty much screaming" all around Port-au-Prince. He said the agency's building shook for about 35 seconds, "and portions of things on the building fell off."

"None of our staff were injured, but lots of walls are falling down," Williams said. "Many of our staff have tried to leave, but were unsuccessful because the walls from buildings and private residences are falling into the streets, so that it has pretty much blocked significantly most of the traffic."

This is the largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help. Other buildings also were damaged and scientists said they expected "substantial damage and casualties."

With communications disrupted there were several reports of deaths or injuries soon after the quake, as powerful aftershocks shook the country.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 5 miles. It was the largest quake recorded in the area, said USGS analyst Dale Grant, and the last major one since a magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984.

Conferencia 2009 de la Asociación Nacional de Bomberos Hispanos (NAHF)

La NAHF, una organización sin fines de lucro creada en 1995, ha estado trabajando para aumentar la educación sobre seguridad y prevención de incendios en nuestras comunidades. La NAHF opera a nivel local, nacional e internacional a fin de desarrollar programas que han cambiado en gran medida la manera en que las municipalidades tratan las diferencias en el idioma, sociales y culturales que colocan barreras a los hispanos al momento de buscar ayuda. La conferencia anual de la NAHF es una parte importante de este programa educativo extensivo y por primera vez está ubicando al evento conjuntamente con la Amercias’ Fire & Security Expo de la NFPA. Este curso de capacitación de cuatro días de duración abarcará los requisitos para el Educador I en seguridad humana e incendios según la NFPA 1035. Se pondrá especial atención en comprender el papel de los educadores en seguridad humana e incendios, comprender la manera en que aprende la gente, y el uso de los diferentes métodos educativos para lograr una conexión de aprendizaje con diferentes audiencias. Asimismo se analizará el uso de diversos materiales para la evaluación del aprendizaje. Se les solicitará a los participantes que realicen una presentación sobre seguridad contra incendios de 10-15 minutos como parte del curso.

Mis Primeros Pasos es una adaptación en español de “Learn Not to Burn” de la NFPA. El programa les enseña a los niños hispanohablantes de la escuela primaria y preescolar las aptitudes y comportamientos clave en seguridad contra incendios. Este taller bilingüe está diseñado por bomberos, educadores y padres que desean aprender una manera eficaz de presentarles la información sobre seguridad contra incendios a los niños de la escuela primaria y preescolar.

Los Buenos Recuerdos

Los Buenos Recuerdos es una adaptación en español de “Rembering When Older Adults Program” de la NFPA. El programa es completo y le enseña paso a paso a este grupo de alto riesgo lecciones para salvar su vida. El curso fue desarrollado por la NFPA y los Centros para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC) a fin de ayudar a la población geriátrica a vivir de manera segura en el hogar la mayor cantidad de tiempo posible. El taller les enseña a los cuidadores que trabajan con ancianos la manera de presentarles a los ciudadanos mayores información sobre seguridad contra caídas y contra incendios. Este taller bilingüe está diseñado para bomberos y otros cuidadores de ancianos que quieren aprender una manera efectiva de presentarle a la población geriátrica información sobre seguridad contra caídas y contra incendios.

El ingreso a la entrega de premios está incluido en su registro a la conferencia. Quienes no asistan a la conferencia y sus cónyuges podrán comprar las entradas de manera individual.

MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (Feb. 25, 2009) – La Asociación Nacionalde Bomberos Hispánicos (NAHF) se une a ROC Exhibitions, Inc. y a la Asociación Nacional de protección contra Incendios (NFPA) como co anfitriona de la Exposición de Seguridad e Incendios del Continente Americano (AFSE), a llevarse a cabo del 28 al 30 de julio de 2009 en el Miami Beach Convention Center, Miami Beach, Fla.

AFSE es la principal exposición que ofrece un enfoque sinérgico de la seguridad, protección contra incendios y seguridad humana. La conferencia internacional de la NAHF se llevará a cabo junto con la Expo, ofreciendo a los expositores un acceso primario a tomadores de decisiones de diferentes países todos en un mismo sitio. Los participantes se beneficiarán de sesiones aún más valiosas, incluidas nuevas sesiones diseñadas para el mercado del usuario final.

La sociedad en participación ROC-NFPA, LLC junto con NAHF ofrece un lugar único y costo efectivo para profesionales que comparten un mismo punto de vista para acceder a información y capacitación, establecer nuevas relaciones y reunirse con proveedores de la industria que pueden suministrar las soluciones que están buscando.

La NFPA— autoridad líder en protección contra incendios, seguridad eléctrica y de la construcción y fuente principal de todos los códigos de incendio de los Estados Unidos, es co-propietaria de AFSE y le brinda su apoyo absoluto. Asimismo la AFSE está oficialmente respaldada por la Asociación Latinoamericana de Seguridad (ALAS), participante activo de la conferencia.

From the President

What a year! As I reflect back on 2007-08 I feel proud and fortunate to be leading such a great organization. Harnessing the momentum of our 12th Annual NAHF International Conference in Dallas, TX we continued to make great strides in building and establishing the "NAHF Brand" in the fire service. As we continue to build new chapters and coalitions our influence and credibility in the fire service simultaneously expands. I'd like to thank each and every member of the NAHF throughout the United States. Because of you, we continue to focus our energy and resources in a direction that will ensure Hispanics have a seat at the table wherever discussions are taking place that address the challenges and opportunities facing Firefighters and our Communities. I especially want to thank our 2007-08 executive board for all their dedication and sacrifices they made to enable us to reach new heights.

As I begin my second term as President, I'm as enthusiastic and optimistic as I was when I began my first term. Although we have long way to go, we have achieved much. I'd like to share with you some of our achievements.

In October 2007 the NAHF partnered with Energizer Batteries and the International Association of Fire Chiefs and participated in the Cambia la Hora Cambia las Pilas (Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Campaign). This marked our fifth consecutive year we have lead the Fire and Life Safety Public Education Spanish media blitz. This media blitz is broadcast throughout the United States. From the shores of Miami to the shores of Los Angeles, and from the windy city of Chicago to the heart of Texas, Spanish speaking residents were informed of the benefits of a working smoke alarm in their homes.

In January 2008 the NAHF played a significant role in the semiannual IAFF "Buddy Mass" Human Relations Conference in New Orleans, LA. The IAFF continues to "Walk the Talk." As the people of this great nation continue to embrace their differences, and as the face of America changes, so does the fire service. IAFF General President Harold Shaitberger continues to lead the charge in bringing all IAFF members together for a more inclusive and united Fire Service.

March 2008 was one of our busiest months. Several members of the NAHF Executive Board met with the NFPA Public Education Staff and President and CEO James M. Shannon at the NFPA Headquarters Quincy, MA. We reviewed and revised our MOA and look forward to enhancing our great partnership. While in the Boston area we also met with the President of Boston Local 718, Ed Kelly, and several of their Hispanic members. We shared some productive dialogue and are optimistic of establishing a new chapter in Boston. In another initiative, the NAHF was one of the first organizations to support the USFA Safe Cigarette Campaign. Exec VP Raul Castillo addressed the Spanish speaking audience across the country from Washington DC. His bilingual message informed Hispanics across the United States about the fire dangers of cigarette smoking. Finally, the NAHF actively participated in the Vision 20/20 initiative in Washington, D.C. to develop the fire service's strategic plan for Public Education and Fire Prevention programs.

In April 2008 the NAHF introduced a resolution to the Congressional Fire Service Institute (CFSI) encouraging all emergency responders to track language needs during emergency responses. In our nation's capital, Washington DC, the CFSI approved our resolution unanimously. This marked the emergence of the Hispanic Firefighter voice in Fire Service politics.

In May the NAHF partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Throughout the country our chapters were the catalyst behind many cities proclaiming May 25 as National Missing Children's Day.

In the early part of the summer I had the opportunity to network with State Fire Marshals and Life Safety Educators from across the country and around the world at the NFPA World Safety Expo in Las Vegas NV. In the middle of summer our Ambassador to International Affairs, Sal Morales, and I traveled to Miami to meet with the board of directors of the NFPA Latin American Section. We had a great meeting and then discussed the possibilities of a joint venture, hosting the 2009 NAHF Conference in Miami, Florida.

In early August the NAHF scheduled a strategic planning session in Camp Connell, CA. The Executive Board spent an extended weekend in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains. We enjoyed the serene, tranquil environment, honored our families, affirmed our Mission and Goals, and reinforced our commitment to serve for the greater good of the NAHF and its members.

Mid-August marked the debut of the NAHF Chiefs Caucus. During the IAFC-FRI Expo in Denver CO, the inaugural Chairman, Deputy Chief Jesus Burciaga of LA County Fire delivered a moving keynote message to those who attended the diversity luncheon. A reception by the Hispanic Chief Officers Caucus was hosted by Total FireGroup Director John Price at the Rodizio Steak House in Downtown Denver. I have never seen so many Hispanic Chief Officers together in one room networking, sharing best practices and mentoring aspiring chief officers. I'd like to personally thank John and Total FireGroup for their tremendous support. I also had my annual meeting with the Superintendent of the National Fire Academy Dr. Denis Oneal. Although little progress has been made, NAHF continues to work to increase the diversity of Firefighters attending on campus sessions at the NFA. Change is not easy, but is inevitable. I look forward to continuing to work with Dr Oneal and will support his efforts to increase diversity at the National Fire Academy. Let's hope some of the change taking place with our new Obama administration will find its way to Emmitsburg Maryland.

September was an epoch month for the NAHF. Hundreds of our members gathered together in Phoenix Arizona for our 13th Annual NAHF International Training Conference. From the opening ceremonies with Arizona Governor (and newly appointed Director of Homeland Security) Janet Nopalitano, to the welcoming by Phoenix Fire Chief Bobby Khan and Local 493 Union President Pete Gorraiz at the Bombero Ball, it was an unforgettable experience. The evening was capped off with a tribute to Chief Mario Trevino, one of the most successful and renowned Hispanic Fire Chiefs in the country. The NAHF will honor Chief Trevino by naming our newly proposed Mario Trevino Chief Officers Institute in Austin, TX. The Institute will provide Hispanic officers with leadership training, mentoring and the ability to attain promotional certifications for Fire Chief opportunities. As the NAHF learned about Chief Trevino's battle with throat cancer we could think of no better way to acknowledge his contributions than to name the institute in his honor. We send Chief Trevino our prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery.

Now that the presidential election is over and the buzz has settled (a little bit), we can look to the future with optimism and hope. As our new president pursues ways to reinvent and heal our country and economy, we must also engage in similar campaigns and initiatives that will affect the fire service. We must keep our eyes and ears wide open and identify any opportunity that will support or enable us to get closer to our goals and objectives. I know our members give much of their time and resources to the less fortunate, but if we are to be part of the healing solution, we must be prepared and willing to sacrifice more for the better good of others. We will need to do more with less. What I ask of you is not foreign, it's part our culture. It is the way we have been raised and it is the thread that keeps us together. Together, as Americans, there is nothing we cannot achieve. I engage 2009 with a full calendar, a Great Spirit, and belief that our best days are ahead us.

CURSO DE MIS PRIMEROS PASOS EN REP. DOM.

Durante los días del 20 al 23 de mayo del 2009, sn la República Dominicana, se ofrecerán los cursos de MIS PRIMEROS PASOS. El programa preescolar de la NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) fue creado hace más de 20 años, diseñado para que los docentes de los distintos niveles desarrollen en los chicos la cultura de la prevención, a fin de evitar incendios y adoptar el comportamiento adecuado en caso de estar en un incendio.

Este programa práctico, destinado a alumnos de nivel inicial, pretende enseñar a los niños entre 3 y 5 años, 8 comportamientos básicos para prevenir incendios y quemaduras, mediante juegos, canciones y actividades educativas.
